Social Capital, Six Degrees, and Social Network Analysis

I was reading the Social Network Analysis article and thought it was very interesting how far we've come with social networking. In school I had a pen pal and we would enclose pictures of ourselves. Now we can do all this and more (like video chatting) through the internet and it will get there in a few seconds. While reading the article of Social Network Analysis, a found a link to Barry Wellman's twitter page which led me to an article called
The Children of Cyberspace: Old Fogies by Their 20s
Most of us know that a Kindle is not a book but a device that holds electronic versions of books. But what about newborns that are growing up with with technology that our generation (I'm 20 years old) had to at least become accustom to. There are two year olds out there that believe that Kindle = Book and kids that go up to computer screen and swipe there finger across it (ipod touch notion) to get some type of reaction. According to the article people in their 20's spend 2 hour/day talking on the phone and checking emails while our siblings (igeneration) spend more time texting.

Researchers are expecting this younger generation to be less patient and will expecting a immediate response to anything they communicate with. I wonder how social networking in companies will change in the future with the expectations of the younger generation?

  1. That's a great observation that how the younger generation will be more impatient than ours. I believe that each generation will become increasingly less patient when it comes to communicating with any type of technology, only because communication methods and devices just keep getting faster each day.

  2. Yeah i wonder too..especially with the way technology is moving at a fast pace...the younger generation is full of expectancy and new stuff to come out because a quite few, exposed and priviledged ones are already accustomed to the new technology and social networking. My little friend back home who is just 10yrs old is on Facebook...i cant believe it!!!....

  3. Good question. I would have to say that they will probably respond to what the people want and make it easier for people to communicate and interact. The question is to add on to yours is when do they stop become so personal any more or customer service related and start interacting via Facebook and Kindle. I think thats the real problem because eventually after that we lose touch with being face to face with a person.
